Museum Design in Saxony-Anhalt, Gustav Adolf Memorial, Lützen
Invited Competition

A design for the extension of the memorial was developed with respect, restraint and spatial clarity. It provides a dignified setting for an extraordinary exhibit and a sombre visitor experience: a mass grave containing the remains of 47 soldiers from the Battle of Lützen in 1632. The new architecture envelops this find as a protective space for focussed contemplation, communication and reflection. At the centre is the grave itself – placed upright in the room – a harrowing testimony to the Thirty Years' War, scenographically staged.
